Kennet & Avon canal town with a racecourse — 25 minutes west of Reading and a proper working market town.

Newbury is 25 minutes west of Reading on the fast GWR line, and it's the proper functional market town of West Berkshire. The Kennet & Avon Canal runs through the middle, the racecourse sits at the east edge, and Vodafone's UK HQ is a mile south. The town centre around Market Place, the Corn Exchange, and Northbrook Street still works as a shopping and market town — Thursday and Saturday markets, independent butchers, a proper bookshop (Chapel Books). At 9pm the Wharf pubs by the canal are busy in summer, and the racecourse crowd fills the town when there's an evening meet.

Stay in Newbury for a working-town base with quick London trains (55 minutes to Paddington), racing, or as a stopover for Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey) 15 minutes north. Skip if you're set on Reading itself — Newbury is 25 minutes away, not next door. What's overrated: the Watermill Theatre at Bagnor as a 'hidden gem'. It's decent but it's not hidden — it's been running productions since 1966. What's underrated: the towpath west from Newbury Wharf, which turns rural inside 10 minutes and gets you to Kintbury in 90 minutes.

The West Berkshire Museum sits in the old Cloth Hall on Market Place, free to enter, open Tuesday to Saturday 10am-4pm, and it's a genuinely good half-hour on the town's cloth-trade and canal history. Parkway Shopping Centre off Cheap Street covers the chain-store end of things — Newbury isn't a boutique town, it's a working one, and the independent shops cluster instead on Northbrook Street and the smaller lanes off Market Place. Wednesday's market is smaller than Thursday and Saturday's, mostly fruit and veg stalls. The town fills for race meets and empties by 10pm otherwise — this isn't a late-night destination.

Beyond the town, the Lambourn Valley — locally called the Valley of the Racehorse — runs northwest through Lambourn itself, a training centre for the sport with no direct rail link, so you'll need a car or taxi. Hungerford, 8 miles west along the A4 and the canal, is a smaller, prettier stop with an antiques trade worth an afternoon if you've already done Newbury's shops. Kintbury sits between the two, reachable by the towpath walk mentioned above or by the same GWR line Newbury sits on, one stop further west.

The Vineyard at Stockcross (£190-£316) is the destination country-house hotel 3 miles west, with a Michelin-starred restaurant and 30,000-bottle cellar. Premier Inn Newbury at London Road (£71-£95) and Travelodge Newbury Central (£59-£79) cover budget. The Mercure Newbury West Grange Hotel, on the edge of town toward the M4, is the mid-range option most guides miss — modern rooms, around £89-£150 a night, useful when the Chequers and the Vineyard are both full on a race weekend. Low season (November-February, outside race meets) drops most three-star rooms into the £65-£85 band; high season (May-September, race weeks, Highclere open days) pushes them past £120. Race days at Newbury Racecourse push everything up 30-50%; check the racing calendar before booking, and book the Chequers first for the Oxford Street address and canal-adjacent walk-out.
