What to expect at Legoland Windsor Resort
Legoland opened in 1996 on the former Windsor Safari Park site and remains one of the most family-focused theme parks in the UK. Over 55 rides and attractions are aimed squarely at children aged 3-12, all built around the Lego brand: dragon coasters, driving schools where kids get a licence, water rides, a submarine ride through real aquarium tanks, and the extraordinary Miniland with 40 million Lego bricks recreating London, Paris and other world cities in 1:20 scale. The 2024 addition of Lego Ferrari Build & Race brought a whole new area.
You need a full day. The park runs on timed tickets and gets busy from 10:30; head to the biggest rides (Dragon coaster, Pirate Falls water flume, Ninja Master) first, then Miniland at lunchtime when the sun is high. The Lego City Deep Sea Adventure submarine is the standout hidden ride. There's a big water play area (bring towels and swimwear in summer) and a live show programme. Food is theme-park quality and price; the packed lunch policy is generous — you can bring your own.
Legoland is 30 minutes' drive east of Reading via the M4 J6, or a train to Windsor + Legoland shuttle bus (£3 return). Book tickets online in advance — walk-up prices are £15 more expensive. The on-site Legoland Hotel and Castle Hotel are highly themed and popular with families making a two-day trip. Best value: two-day tickets are barely more than one day. Avoid the very peak summer weekends when queue times top 90 minutes on the biggest rides.
