About Salisbury
Salisbury grew around the cathedral after its move from Old Sarum in 1220. The city has a twice-weekly market in the Market Place and a number of historic inns and coaching houses. Nearby are the prehistoric monuments of Stonehenge and Avebury, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the Wiltshire Downs. The city is compact and walkable, with the cathedral, market, and museum all within easy reach of each other. Salisbury is also a gateway to the New Forest and the south coast, with direct trains to London Waterloo and the West Country.
Where to stay in Salisbury
Cathedral Close. The historic heart of Salisbury, where medieval buildings and the cathedral itself surround quiet lawns and lanes. Staying here puts you within steps of the cathedral, the Magna Carta, and the city's oldest architecture.
City Centre. The area around the Market Place and the Guildhall, with shops, restaurants, and the main bus and rail links. It is convenient for exploring the city on foot and for day trips to Stonehenge.
Fisherton Street. A lively street leading from the railway station towards the city centre, lined with independent shops, cafes, and pubs. It offers a more local feel while remaining close to the cathedral and market.
Harnham. A residential area south of the city centre, across the Avon from the cathedral. It provides quieter streets and views back towards the cathedral spire, with footpaths along the water meadows.
Getting there and around
Salisbury has a railway station with direct trains to London Waterloo, Southampton, Portsmouth, Bristol, and Exeter. The station is a short walk from the city centre and cathedral. By road, the A30 and A36 meet near the city, and the M27 and M3 are within reach for drivers from the south and London. Buses connect Salisbury with nearby towns and Stonehenge. Within the city, most sights are within walking distance, and local buses serve the suburbs and surrounding villages. Taxis are available at the station and in the centre.
When to go
Salisbury is a year-round destination, but spring and summer bring the best weather for exploring the cathedral close, water meadows, and nearby Stonehenge. The city hosts a number of festivals and events, including the Salisbury International Arts Festival in late spring. Winter can be cold and wet, but the cathedral and museums remain open. Weekdays are generally quieter than weekends, especially in the market place.
