About Salcombe

Salcombe's waterfront is the focal point, with boatyards, quays, and a mix of shops and cafes. The town has a seasonal character, busier in summer when visitors come for sailing, beaches, and the coastal scenery. Several beaches are within walking distance or a short ferry ride, including North Sands, South Sands, and Mill Bay. The surrounding countryside offers walking routes with views over the estuary and out to sea.

The town is part of the South Hams, a region of Devon known for its rolling hills, small villages, and coastline. Salcombe is about 20 miles from Plymouth and around 20 miles from Totnes, both of which have rail connections. The nearest mainline station is at Totnes, from where buses and taxis continue to Salcombe.

Where to stay in Salcombe

Salcombe town centre. The town centre puts you within walking distance of the waterfront, shops, and restaurants, though parking can be limited.

North Sands. North Sands is a beach area just outside the town centre, with a sandy beach and a few places to stay, and it is on the South West Coast Path.

South Sands. South Sands is a beach and cove to the south of the town, reachable by road or by the South Sands ferry from the town centre.

East Portlemouth. East Portlemouth is a village on the opposite side of the estuary, accessible by passenger ferry from Salcombe, with beaches and walking routes.

Getting there and around

Salcombe is reached by road via the A381 from Totnes or the A379 from Plymouth, both of which connect to the M5 and A38. The nearest mainline railway station is at Totnes, about 20 miles away, with buses and taxis available from there. Exeter Airport is further afield, around 40 miles. Within Salcombe, the town is compact and best explored on foot, but steep hills mean some areas are hilly. A passenger ferry links the town centre with East Portlemouth, and another ferry runs to South Sands in season. Local buses serve nearby villages and beaches, but services can be limited, especially outside summer.

When to go

Summer is the most popular time, when the weather is warmest and the ferries and boat trips operate, but the town is also at its busiest. Spring and autumn offer milder weather and fewer visitors, with many attractions still open. Winter is quieter, with some seasonal businesses closed, but the coastal scenery remains accessible. Rainfall is spread throughout the year, so it is wise to be prepared for changing conditions.
