Where to Base Yourself and What to Skip
If your days are in central Reading — the Oracle, the Abbey ruins, the museums — a hotel in town near the station gives you the easiest transport and the shortest walk home at night. Book Caversham itself if you want riverside mornings, quieter streets and a village feel, accepting the 15- to 20-minute bridge walk into town. For a first visit of two or three nights, I would book central Reading and treat Caversham as an evening stroll and a pub dinner; for a longer stay, a Caversham guesthouse near Church Street is the more restful choice.
Skip the idea of a car for this trip. Parking in Caversham's centre is limited and the one-way system around the bridges confuses visitors; the bus, your feet and occasional taxis cover everything. Also skip the outlying retail parks if you are car-free — they are designed around driving. A side note if you have time: Henley-on-Thames is reachable by bus and rail connections, but it is a separate day out, not part of getting around Reading.
Questions, answered
Can I walk from Reading station to Caversham?
Yes. It is about 20 minutes over Caversham Bridge via Church Street, or 15 minutes over Reading Bridge to the Oracle side. The riverside route through Christchurch Meadows is flat but unsheltered, so it is less appealing in wind and rain with luggage.
Do buses run between Caversham and Reading town centre?
Reading Buses services along Church Street and Henley Road link Caversham with the town centre and station, with fares in the normal town-bus range. Services are frequent by day but thinner in the evening and on Sundays, so check the last departure if you are out late.
Is Caversham a good base for a Reading visit without a car?
It works well if you want a quieter, riverside stay, with a 15- to 20-minute walk into town. For a short first visit focused on central Reading, booking a hotel near the station is more convenient and saves the bridge walk at night.
